Dear Jammin Butter,

This is not a request for support. I just wanted to comment on the first Monthly Mystery Box we received yesterday. We LOVE it! We have a large dog, (over 100 lbs) and we were amazed at well the products suited his needs. You obviously put a lot of thought into which items to place in the Mystery Box. We will be able to use all of them. (One will be a gift because we already own one). We also appreciate the fact that there were no food products made in China.

Just wanted to say thank you.

We will be looking forward to receiving the next Monthly Mystery Dog Box!

Jammin’ Butter in the Tri-Cities Business Journal

We were truly honored to be featured in the October 2014 issue of the Tri-Cities Business Journal. Jeff Keeling, Associate Editor for the Tri-Cities Business Journal, stopped by during our Five Year Anniversary Party to do a feature story on our start to where we are now. We are taken aback from the interest in our story and love being a part of the Johnson City/Tri-Cities community.
Read the story in its entirety here, or go to http://bjournal.com/jammin-butter-having-fun-making-money/

Five years in, Internet marketer well past startup status

By Jeff Keeling

“Bargain hunters. The people who like to grab stuff off the impulsive section in the checkout line. Those are the customers that shop with us.”

Vantha Chhoun, Jammin Butter co-owner

“We still maintain a little bit of goofiness. Every website you go to is, ‘here’s this, buy this, ok.’ We would go insane if we had to act like that all day. We’re very focused on growing this business, but we don’t think we need to do it in the traditional format.”

Chad Biggs, Jammin Butter co-owner

The video opens in a darkened room. A light flicks on. Jammin Butter co-owner and chief quirky video spokesman Chad Biggs appears, looking at a built-in computer camera and wearing an LED headlamp best described as functional but not necessarily sleek. He touts the “Cree” bulb’s features and benefits before cutting to the chase and exemplifying one of the Johnson City-based Internet marketing company’s main pillars of success.

Jammin Butter Co-Owner Chad Biggs

Jammin Butter Co-Owner Chad Biggs

“Let me tell you why you’re getting an incredible deal,” the 34-year-old entrepreneur explains. “Nothing is wrong with the headlamp, it’s in perfect shape. I’ll tell you one thing, though – they put ‘batteries included’ on this. Like I said, it takes three regular triple batteries. That’s why you’re getting it for a ridiculously low price – factory goofed … so it turns out, stores can’t take ‘em. You’re going to get them at a ridiculous low price.”

In five years, on a platform consisting of equal parts tech prowess, bargain basement prices and building a quirky brand, Jammin Butter has grown from a two-person startup to a $4 million Internet marketing firm with 23 employees.

The company just celebrated its fifth anniversary with a party at its Roweland Drive headquarters that included Sumo wrestling, a watermelon-eating contest and distribution of “mystery bags of crap,” but its roots trace to 2006. That was the year that Biggs, as a side project under the company he was with at the time, started a website selling stuff online. The site generated $139 that year.

By mid-2009, Biggs was wearying of his association with Razor, the tech company he’d helped found, but he remained rather enamored of the Internet marketing website, ivegottohavethat.com, which was selling everything from LED headlamps to kitchen gadgets. Biggs was also impressed with Vantha Chhoun, who was working with him as they slowly built the website business in Johnson City using equal parts silliness and super-low prices.

Biggs told Chhoun he wanted to spin the website off independently, and that he wanted her to come on as a business partner.

Jammin Butter Co-Owner Vantha Chhoun

Jammin Butter Co-Owner Vantha Chhoun

“She looked at me like I was kind of crazy, because she was my employee at that point, but I felt like this had drastic potential and didn’t want to take on the venture myself,” Biggs says.

Fun was the key ingredient, he adds. The fact that Internet sales were at roughly 3.5 percent of the U.S. total at that time but would rise to around 6.5 percent today proved to be some yeast for the dough.

“It was more hands on – you could just think of an idea and make it happen,” Biggs says of the marketing website’s flexibility.

Chhoun was more than intrigued.

“We knew this (ivegottohavethat.com) was a viable part of the company, and I just weighed that option. If I didn’t jump in and help, I don’t think the company would have made it this far.”

Biggs agrees. “I would have walked away from it myself if she hadn’t joined in.”

So in September 2009, Biggs and Chhoun formed Jammin Butter as a sole proprietorship (the incorporated as an LLC a year later) with one website. Their products flowed in and out of a cramped space on West Walnut Street. They hustled to find additional vendors, and ingratiated themselves with “Bill” and “Tony” from FedEx, who built a system around their needs.

“They realized our potential,” Biggs says. “They totally took a gamble on us setting up all this stuff, assuming the smoke we were blowing wasn’t just smoke.

“It turned out it succeeded for them, too. We are a very large customer of theirs.”

Indeed, Jammin Butter moved to larger quarters across Walnut, but filled that up quickly and is now situated (since early this year) in 16,000 square feet on Roweland Drive in East Johnson City. Through its seven existing websites, the company pushed more than 70,000 products out in July using FedEx, UPS, the postal service and DHL. Those products run the gamut from pillows and electronics to pet goods and Elvis Presley Mix and Match Magnetic Dress Up wardrobes.

Absurdity with a mission

“It wasn’t really about making money,” Chhoun says of the early days, when the pair would throw a few items up on the initial website just to see what might sell.

“If it sells right away, you might not have any money, but you made a customer,” she says.

Before incorporating as Jammin Butter, Biggs and Chhoun had established the foundations of the company. Find stuff cheap, sell it cheap, have fun in the process and mix in a heaping dose of quirkiness.

“We sold weird stuff, we had real quirky writing,” Biggs says. “I had a lot of very bad/witty technical writing and funny, silly videos.”

Vantha, with one of our Monthly Mystery Dog Boxes

Vantha, with one of our Monthly Mystery Dog Boxes

Much of that foundation is maintained today, even on the websites that mainly offer utilitarian products in the way of everything from electronics and kitchen wares to bedding. Click a video link, and you’ll likely catch Biggs at his desk hawking anything from a memory foam pillow to vintage comic book signs.

The fun cranks up a notch on some of the sites selling more eclectic wares, such as hoboninja.com. A recent click to the homepage revealed lots of T-shirts for sale (the Jammin Butter crew designs and prints many of them in-house) including a “There is a TIME and a PLACE for DECAF COFFEE. NEVER and in the TRASH” model. The shirts were mixed in with a “Game of Thrones” inspired repositionable toilet decal and a Hillary Clinton nutcracker, along with more useful items such as a pair of noise-cancelling earphones for $4.99.

“We try to make sure and always stay focused on what is making the company money,” Biggs says, “but if we were forced not to dabble in things, we would go crazy. And that’s how you find out what works.”

Early on, Biggs was sourcing products from just a few vendors, and occasionally even just finding stuff at brick and mortar stores so cheaply that if he thought he might be able to sell it for a profit on the website, he would buy it.

“At one point we literally went down to Big Lots, bought some stuff off the shelf and put it on our website,” Biggs recalls, adding that finding vendors is not a simple task.

Chhoun turned her attention to increasing the stable of vendors as the company grew. Websites proliferated and currently stand at seven.

All of that product availability is one thing that keeps Biggs and Chhoun dabbling in new ideas, and keeps their three top behind-the-scenes lieutenants and longtime employees hopping. Those folks are Jimmy Mills on the web/creative side, Danny Flores in logistics and Jessie Wilson in customer service.

Jammin Butter logistics guru Danny Flores.

Jammin Butter logistics guru Danny Flores.

Jammin Butter uses a “just in time” concept of procurement, buying products a season in advance instead of a year in advance.

“The moment we pay for it and know it’s on the road to us, we immediately sell it,” Chhoun says. “By the time it actually makes it to us, we already have it shipped out the door.”

Biggs says the business “is seen as a low-margin industry, and it can be, but sometimes it’s high margin. If you buy something for four bucks and sell it for seven, that’s a pretty good margin. It all depends on what we’re selling.”

Jammin Butter has come a long way from the days when Biggs would log in to whatever Wifi hotspot he could find and try to move a few items that he had coded and posted to ivegottohavethat.com. He and Chhoun say they want to maintain a fun environment for themselves and their employees, stay family friendly and not working nights or weekends, and keep it a bit odd.

“I think we can get as big as we want to be,” he says. “At some point you jeopardize the culture of what you’re doing and internal structure of things. We don’t want every night to be a sleepless night, but we’re working on some stuff that should let us grow financially without necessarily growing so much structurally.”

While doing our daily social media posts and searches, we stumbled upon a VERY AWESOME tweet to our @ThatDailyDeal Twitter account. We were truly blown away that @DocSigma did a live unveiling of both our Monthly Mystery Box and Monthly Mystery Box for Dogs. Anyways, with no further ado…. we present @DocSigma Mystery Box Unveiling October 2014 + Bonus DOGGIE BOX video

PS: if you would like to unveil one of our Monthly Mystery Boxes, please feel free to share on social sites, so we can curate the videos and see your reactions. AND pro tip – we will probably, most definitely send you some free swag.

Donation Season Kickoff

With winter settling in soon, the strain on housing the homeless and less fortunate gets harder on non-profits and outreach programs. Through YOUR generous donations on our checkout pages, we have been able to donate a ton of items (anything from clothing, to backpacks to personal care items) to local Tri-Cities organizations, like Summit Life, Good Samaritan and many more.

But we thought…. we can do more. With our ability to purchase in high-volume at low, low costs, we can spread the wealth across the country. And this is where you step in! We need to know where/what organizations are in need of items. So head on over to our 13Deals.com Facebook and post on our feed any local outreach/non-profit that could use some donated items from us.  We will be sending blankets, socks, gloves, hats, art sets etc their way. We will be monitoring our feed, connecting with users/organizations on need and quantity of items, and getting them shipped out. We do ask that, in return, we receive some photos of our donations being received or put to good use, so we can spread the cheer! Learn more about this opportunity by watching the below Youtube video for a bit more information:

Must Read on our Monthly Mystery Boxes

Okay, okay… these keep getting better and better. We seriously cannot stop blushing from all the love we keep getting on our Monthly Mystery Box Subscriptions. The overwhelming positive response is truly the reason we love what we do here. Keep reading to see the email we received this week regarding October’s Monthly Mystery Box Subscription!

So, I said to myself, if the second box doesn’t knock my socks off, I’m going to cancel my subscription, after all, for $30 a month, I don’t need to make a collection of junk in my house…  Fear not, I’m keeping my subscription!  I had to wait a day or two till we had time to gather around as a family and open our latest mystery box, all my kids and even my wife were excited and we do it as a family because it’s just a fun thing to open a mystery box as a family.

The first thing I pulled out was the SoundLogic Headphones, followed by the Flair Hair bandanna.  Both my boys were so excited and they’ve been walking around the house for the past two days wearing the headphones and flair hair bandanna (I found the bandana for sale on SirMacho.com and plan on buying a couple more).  These were followed by a high quality collapsible walking stick which would double as a sword or just a large stick for my boys to hit each other with, so we gave it to my Father in Law who has been recently getting into hiking through the parks and was planning on buying a walking stick.  By this time, my wife made her comment again of “Are these people spying on us???”  The grill light with a clamp at the bottom was a perfect fit for my sons work bench in the attic to add some extra light and then a couple more items all hit the mark.

We pulled out the last item, and it was a large item wrapped in a dark plastic wrap so we couldn’t tell what it was.  So we all took a turn feeling it and squeezing it and trying to guess what it was.  We opened it after we all guessed and much to our surprise, it was a Hammock!  Not just any hammock, a really nice hammock.  Of course, this led into a whole ridiculous discussion about the pronunciation of the word hammock, where my 15 year old daughter kept pronouncing the “ock” like the “oc” in the word octopus.  Kids these days!  Anyways, the hammock is being stored in the camp box my  wife has for stuff for my kids to use in camp. One of my boys had a cheap hammock at camp this summer and said it was the best thing to have hanging from the rafters in his bunk house, so it will definitely be used well this summer.

Overall, every item we got in the box is being put to good use, and the total retail value on Amazon for all this stuff is about $80 (of course we had to check)!  Granted, I personally didn’t get anything from this box as it all went to my different family members, but I’m still rating it a 10/10 with nothing really being junky or a waste of money.  We’re keeping the subscription just because we have so much fun sitting around the table at night together and spending an hour together opening the box and playing with everything and finding a good use for it all!  And my daughter asked me to buy her her own mystery box subscription for her birthday (sorry, not gonna happen, but it is a great idea)!  My wife even took pictures of all our loot and shared it with her friends trying to convince them to get their own mystery boxes!

Thanks again for another wonderful box and we can’t wait till the next one shows up!

13 Deals Review & Giveaway (US)

A few months ago while I was planning my son’s 6th birthday party online, I came across the site 13Deals.com. There I found some really cool silicone baking molds that were in the shape of Lego blocks that were perfect for making chocolate treats my son’s party! I was impressed with not only the great prices, but also the service of the site – easy to browse, easy to check out, and as soon as I completed my purchase I received an order confirmation email and another note when my item shipped. I bookmarked the site for future visits, as they carry a variety of items perfect for any and every occasion. If you’ve never visited the site before, you’re missing out on some great deals!

13deals-1

13 Deals allowed me to choose any item from their site for this review. As I browsed through their selection I found a ton of things that I wanted – for me, my husband, my kids, my home. You can shop by category, so I decided to check out their pet section to see if there was anything good for my two favorite puppies, and that’s when I discovered that 13 Deals offers a Monthly Mystery Box subscription for dogs. At only $19.99 a month with free shipping, and the ability to customize your box by the size of your dog, I thought this was too good to pass up. I chose a box for a small dog, as my two are only about 15 pounds each. When it arrived I couldn’t believe the size of the box, and was thrilled to see that it was filled with tons of fantastic goodies!

13deals-2

The box included:

* Three quality toys
* Retractable leash
* Slicker brush
* Sharper Image brand Pet-O-Meter (to track your dogs steps)
* Two bags of training treats
* Two dental treats
* Bone-shaped cookie
* Treat Launcher (if you don’t have one of these, get one – they are so fun!)

13deals-3

Sophie and Hawkeye went right for the toys when I opened this box. It was so fun to watch them enjoy their new treats. The goodies in the box far exceed the $19.99 price tag. This subscription box would make a great gift for the holiday season – either for your pets or for the pet-lover in your life who is hard to shop for. Shipping is free every month, and you can cancel at any time.

13deals-4

13 Deals is a deal site committed to helping you evade retail prices. There’s always something new, so your best bet is to sign up for their email newsletter to stay on top of the deals. With the holidays around the corner, you could get all your shopping done on this one site! To see the latest 13 Deals has to offer, check out their site. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.

Jammin’ Butter Chili Cook Off

Last Thursday, we held our November Birthday extravaganza for three of our November babies:

Jessie  – Accounts Manager & Customer Service Manager

Terry – Operations Manager

Chasity – Warehouse Team Member

And to spice it up a bit (you can see where I am headed, right?!?!) we decided to hold a Chili Cook-Off!!! Four crockpots entered the kitchen and only one was declared the winner!! We also had the wildcard of Tim’s Secret Family Recipe Ravioli… which was just a huge can of Chef Boyardee. Whomp whomp.

We had a tie for the Best Chili, between our two co-owners, Chad and Vantha (I promise we weren’t all sucking up!) After doing another round of votes… Vantha came out victorious! On the line was bragging rights (which are the best) and a trophy – which now proudly adorns her office!

13 Deals Mystery Box + Giveaway

A few months ago I introduced you to 13Deals.com and their fantastic monthly pet mystery box (my two pups are still having a blast with the toys they received!). I was very impressed with the quality of their pet box, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to give their Monthly Mystery Box Fashion Subscription a try – why should my dogs have all the fun!

13 Deals promises to deliver at least three fashion items every month in their mystery box. At only $15 a month (shipping is free), you can have a fun fashion surprise delivered right to your door every month, with the option to cancel your subscription at any time. I like the price point of this box, as I’ve looked into other services that seemed way out of my comfort zone with their monthly pricing.

13dealscom-1

When my box arrived, I have to say, I truly loved everything I received. In my box was a great stylish hat perfect for the cold winter months ahead.

13dealscom-213dealscom-5

I also received a neat leaf design necklace and an assortment of five bracelets that I actually like paired together as one look.

13dealscom-4

I wear a lot of basic black, so these jewelry pieces will look great with anything in my wardrobe. What I really like about everything I received is that everything is wearable – nothing too flashy, perfect pieces to wear every day or with a special outfit on date night.

13dealscom-3

Sometimes mystery boxes can be a hit or a miss, but at this price point, even if you don’t love a piece or two, you can pass items on to your daughters, nieces, or fashion-loving friends, without feeling guilty about how much money you’ve spent. I believe first impressions are key, and 13 Deals has impressed me with this box. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a little fun and fashion!

If you haven’t had a chance to visit 13 Deals yet, you’re missing out on some great deals. They truly have something for everybody – yourself, your pets, your children, your parents, your spouse – and for every room in your house. I love their new Posters & Stickers category which includes some neat super hero wall decals that I know my boys would love. After you peruse the site, be sure to follow 13 Deals on Facebook and Twitter for more fun.

Hi 13deals!

Merry, Merry Christmas!!

Thank you so much for doing such a wonderful job with the mystery bag! My nephew and niece and I opened it & it was so much fun! :) My nephew loved the speakers and iPad holder, plus the screw driver set for use with his remote control cars & helicopter and other stuff like that which need a screw driver to change batteries, etc. My niece loved the Duck Hat. She put it on and danced around as a rock star and also called herself a good fairy pirate (so I went and snuck in a pirate fairy magical wand while we were opening). She also loved the Ice Slush Puppy cup and the waterfall calendar (She’s an artist so I also snuck in a Crayola Paint set.) In addition, the puppies loved the Santa dog toy and I loved the blanket. So Christmassy cute!

Thank you so much for all your hard work, diligence and bright, cheery fun! I’m sure it’s difficult to fill bags when you’re not sure of a customers wants or likes. I’m sure you elves wished you had one of those I Like This…questionnaires filled out by each customer, as elves always want to be sparkly spectacular. I’m sure that’d be very helpful, but you did a terrific job!

Thanks so much for everything! The bag was great! Can’t wait until next year! Think I’ll create one for us with the empty one we have and order one from you, too.

Merry, Merry Christmas! May your New Year be fantastically filled with fun, happy, playful excitement!!

Andrew L. from Fort Washington, PA

I just got this and its name lived up to the hype. We were immediately delighted with sack it came in and found everything inside to be useful and or fun in some way. That was an unexpected treat.

Thanks for the grins!
